Pelicans’ Anthony Davis values ‘legacy over money’ as rumors continue to swirl
New Orleans Pelicans All-Star forward Anthony Davis has become heavily mentioned in trade rumors over the last couple of weeks.
This has generated much chatter around his long-term future with the Pelicans. In response to this, Davis had an intriguing response when asked about if he cares more about money or his legacy, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.
“I’d take legacy over money,” Davis told Yahoo Sports after Friday’s 112-104 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. “I want to have a legacy.
“All my people that look up to me, the younger kids, I want them to know about AD’s legacy. Championships, the things I do in the community, being a good teammate, playing hard. All that stuff matters the most to me. Don’t get me wrong, money is amazing. But I think in that sense, money or legacy, I think my legacy will win that battle every time.”
Davis clearly wants to leave a strong legacy that shines greatly upon himself. He isn’t so much concerned about the money given that his talent warrants a lucrative contract, but more so of how his teammates will view him.
This also sheds light on the fact that Davis could be losing out on money if he elects to decline a potential five-year, $239 million super-max contract next summer if the Pelicans offer him that. What this also suggests is that it is a fluid situation that could change in the coming months.
The only thing that is certain at this point is if the Pelicans eventually decide to move off Davis, there will be teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics ready to jump into the mix to pounce on that scenario.
