Panthers QB Cam Newton says he feels like he’s at ‘full strength right now’
Earlier this offseason, Carolina Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton underwent shoulder surgery.
In the weeks that have followed, Newton has had a steady recovery from the injury. The former league MVP has given a recent update on the situation stating that he is feeling great physically at his point in his rehab process, according to David Newton of ESPN.
“I’m feeling great now,” Newton told ESPN in an interview from “Fellaship,” his Atlanta-based cigar bar/restaurant that held its grand opening this past weekend. “I feel like I do have full strength right now. But me telling the doctor, that is different than, you know, whatever the clearance process may be.”
Newton was notably impacted by his shoulder in the second half of the season that led to him being shut down prior to the final two games of the season after the Panthers were eliminated from the playoffs. He had been dealing with nagging shoulder pain throughout the latter portion of the year.
The surgery back in January saw him undergo an arthroscopic operation where doctors removed scar tissue that remained from 2017 offseason surgery on his partially torn rotator cuff. Newton’s recovery process has drawn more attention due to the fact that the team took former West Virginia quarterback Will Grier in this year’s draft.
That said, Newton is expected to begin throwing later this offseason with eyes toward being able to be ready for the season opener. If there is any setback or things take longer than expected, it could elevate Grier into spot starts until the Pro Bowler returns this season.
