Chiefs could be adding Tyreek Hill this week vs. Colts

The Kansas City Chiefs have the best offense in football this season. Somehow the above is true, despite Tyreek Hill playing a grand total of 1.5 quarters of it. After suffering a sternocalvicular joint injury in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Hill has ben sidelined for the last three games. However, the All-Pro returned to the practice field on Wednesday, and has participated in the last two practices in a limited capacity.

It’s unknown whether Tyreek Hill will be able to play on Sunday night against the Indianapolis Colts, but signs are pointing towards significant progress. This s terrific news for the Chiefs, who are 4-0 and trying to keep pace in the battle for AFC home field alongside the New England Patriots.

To say the offense has thrived without Hill would be true, but it would also miss the notion that eventually, Hill’s absence will be felt. One could argue this was the case last Sunday, when the Chiefs barely survived a scare against the Detroit Lions. Kansas City won 34-30, scoring the final touchdown with 20 seconds left, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes didn’t throw a single touchdown pass, and the offense only accounted for 27 of the points while giving the ball away three times.

With Hill back in the mix, Demarcus Robinson and rookie receiver Mecole Hardman can go back to smaller roles. Robinson stepped up with a huge day in Week 2 against the Oakland Raiders, hauling in six passes for 172 yards and two scores. Hardman took the turn of star a week later against the Baltimore Ravens, totaling 97 yards and a score in a 33-28 victory.

Ultimately, Robinson and Hardman sliding into lesser roles while Hill, Sammy Watkins and tight end Travis Kelce are the marquee names is best for Kansas City. The offense is deeper and more versatile, while the stars are all humming on the field together, creating mismatches across the formation.

It’s almost impossible to replace Hill, who caught 87 passes for 1,479 yards and 12 touchdowns a year ago. The Chiefs have done an admirable job, but getting their biggest weapon back will only make Mahomes (somehow) better while easing the burden of the rest of the supporting cast.

With the Colts and Houston Texans on deck, Kansas City needs all the ammunition it can get, as it hopes to win contests which could prove incredibly valuable later in the year.
