Warriors reportedly ‘monitoring’ Karl-Anthony Towns’ situation in Minnesota

Since erasing an over-decade playoff drought, the Minnesota Timberwolves have put things in reverse in the past couple of seasons.

That has drawn some internal pushback, with All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns moving through yet another tough season. According to Ethan Strauss of The Athletic, Towns is reportedly growing unhappy with the direction of the franchise that has drawn the attention of the Golden State Warriors to move in on him.

The Warriors have been monitoring Karl-Anthony Towns’ situation in Minnesota. He’s under contract until 2023-24 but has less reason than Antetokounmpo to be thrilled with his team’s trajectory. This was a topic among multiple team executives at the recent G League Showcase, with a few relaying word that Towns is unhappy in Minnesota. The Wolves currently sit at 13th in the Western Conference, two spots ahead of the gap-year Warriors, looking at another lost season.

It’s still quite early in the season, but it doesn’t appear that the Timberwolves are going to be in serious playoff contention as the year wears along. Meanwhile, Towns is in the midst of a long-term contract that runs through the 2023-24 season.

The Warriors are going to through a stepback campaign due to injuries, but the team has the pieces when healthy to make noise in the stacked Western Conference. The addition of Towns would be another tremendous step in the right direction, but that would likely require them moving on from a core piece, with that candidate being All-Star guard D’Angelo Russell.

It’s a situation in Minnesota that Golden State will keep a close eye on throughout the year.
