Colts QB Philip Rivers Considered Retirement Before Joining Indy

The Indianapolis Colts decided that Jacoby Brissett wasn’t the quarterback to get the job done in the post-Andrew Luck era. This was evident after a less than stellar 2019 NFL season. This put the Colts in position to look for a new leader under center during this offseason as a result. They appear to have gotten their man in veteran gunslinger, Philip Rivers.

Indianapolis and Rivers agreed to a deal earlier this week with. The former Los Angeles Chargers quarterback feels he still has something left in the tank. However, Rivers did have some doubt after ending his relationship with the Chargers as he considered retirement before ultimately landing with the Colts, via Mike Wells of ESPN.

“I think really where we settled in is I still love to play, certainly not coming off my best year [in 2019], but I know I still can play at a high level,” Rivers said. “… It was one of those deals where we said if there’s nothing else out there then that’ll be our answer. I don’t want to just try to hang on to play.

“The fact it ended up being with this organization, it made it that much more exciting to keep going,” he added.

Last season with the Chargers, Rivers had one of his worst years since coming into the NFL back in 2004. Los Angeles finished the year at 5-11 and the team was ready to break things up as a result.

Rivers finished with 4,615 yards to go along with 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He will now attempt to extend his career with a team that his playoff ready and armed with an elite receiver in T.Y. Hilton.
