Newton has been on the decline for the past couple of years due to injury issues. His release isn’t a complete surprise as rumors had been swirling around the NFL about the star quarterback’s future with the team and in the NFL, for that matter.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney made the following statement about the team’s move to release Newton and how much they appreciate the former MVP for what he’s done for the franchise, via Pro Football Talk.

“Cam has meant a lot to this organization and the Carolinas,” Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney said in a statement. “Everyone saw his performances on the field. I had the privilege of seeing how hard he worked off the field, and his commitment to this team when no one was watching. He’s the ultimate competitor and it physically hurts him to lose. He willed this team to victory on many occasions and will always be considered one of the greatest players in the history of this franchise. His contributions to this team, this community and the game of football will leave a lasting impact on our organization.”

During his stint with the Panthers, Newton threw for 29,041 yards, 182 passing touchdowns, and 108 interceptions. He also rushed for 58 touchdowns and 4,806 yards.
