2020 NFL Draft: 5 NFL teams who need receivers in the first round
5. Denver Broncos
The Broncos have Courtland Sutton in their receivers room, but not much else. Any team playing Denver with its current group is going to double Sutton and dare quarterback Drew Lock to win anywhere else. If general manager John Elway believes the same, he should be hoping to land either Henry Ruggs III or Jerry Jeudy out of Alabama, or CeeDee Lamb of Oklahoma. Any of the three would be a huge upgrade opposite Sutton and provide Denver with a formidable one-two punch.
4. Minnesota Vikings
After trading Stefon Diggs to the Buffalo Bills a few weeks ago for a first-round pick, the Vikings have to replace him. While Adam Thielen is terrific, it’s tough to beat a good defense with only one perimeter threat. Having two selections in the 20s (Nos. 22 and 25 to be exact), general manager Rick Spielman can add help on both sides of the ball. With Jeudy, Ruggs and Lamb likely gone here, look for Minnesota to target one of Justin Jefferson, Brandon Aiyuk, Denzel Mims or Jalen Reagor to replace Diggs.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars
If Gardner Minshew is going to succeed as a young quarterback, he needs help. D.J. Chark is a quality player, but he’s a borderline top receiver on a good team. General manager Dave Caldwell would be well-served to find a running mate for the former LSU star, perhaps in the first round. Picking ninth and 20th-overall, Jacksonville could take the first receiver off the board or wait and take someone off the second tier. Should the Jaguars hit on a receiver there, Minshew’s chances for success skyrocket with Clark, tight end Tyler Eifert and the rookie suddenly in tow.
2. New York Jets
The Jets have to do something to help third-year quarterback Sam Darnold. New York lost receiver Robby Anderson and the depth chart remaining is hideous. If the Jets want to compete in the wide-open AFC East, they need to land a receiver early. Picking at No. 11, New York should have at least one of Jeudy, Ruggs and Lamb available, if not two or even all three. General manager Joe Douglas has to make a strong move.
1. Philadelphia Eagles
No team is both a contender and in a more desperate situation at receiver. Carson Wentz dragged an injury-riddled Eagles team to the playoffs last year. Now, with DeSean Jackson aging and coming off injury, and Nelson Agholor gone, Philadelphia has to find quality on the outside. It would be stunning if the Eagles don’t address this problem in the first round, picking 21st.
