Vikings star Dalvin Cook wants a contract extension now
The Minnesota Vikings are hoping to bounce back after falling short in the divisional round of the playoffs last season.
Before they begin that quest in the 2020 campaign, it will likely require them to give a lucrative payday to star running back Dalvin Cook. The Pro Bowler expected to hold out for a new contract this offseason. (H/T Pro Football Talk)
“He’s out. Without a reasonable extension, he will not be showing up for camp or beyond,” a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Cook is heading into the final year of his rookie deal and hasn’t made any progress toward an extension with the Vikings. He is coming off a career-best year that saw him rush for 1,153 yards with 13 touchdowns along with 53 receptions for 519 receiving yards.
The 24-year-old has become the team’s workhorse in the backfield behind his dual-threat ability. He has firmly emerged as one of the league’s best running back that should have several highly productive campaigns ahead of him.
The Vikings could have some hesitation as Cook has dealt with nagging injuries through his first three years in the league. There hasn’t been any figure amount around how much he is looking for, but Christian McCaffrey’s four-year, $64 million deal only raised that bar even higher for the Vikings.
Cook has proven to be a bonafide talent that Minnesota can depend on, and it may be a matter of time before the two sides find common ground to keep with the franchise for the long haul.
