Warriors confirm torn Achilles tendon for Klay Thompson

The Golden State Warriors moved through much of the offseason with tremendous optimism concerning the upcoming 2020-21 campaign.

Much of that sentiment was deflated after the Warriors confirmed via Twitter that star guard Klay Thompson suffered a torn right Achilles tendon.

Klay Thompson suffered a torn right Achilles tendon, an MRI confirmed today in Los Angeles. Thompson suffered the injury in a workout yesterday in Southern California. He is expected to miss the 2020-21 season.

The injury effectively ends any possibility of Thompson playing next season. The All-Star guard previously missed all of last year due to a torn ACL that he suffered in June 2019. He was progressing smoothly through his rehab with the expectation he would be ready to play without a hitch.

The Achilles injury will now force him to miss nearly two consecutive seasons. The situation puts forth doubt that Thompson may ever return to being the player he was before the back-to-back significant injuries.

Thompson’s absence takes a significant ding to the Warriors’ championship hopes as he a massive part in their success. He helped form arguably the league’s best backcourt alongside two-time league MVP Stephen Curry.

Golden State has responded quickly by using their $17.2 million trade exception to acquire swingman Kelly Oubre on Thursday afternoon. Oubre will help fill the massive void left by Thompson, the team’s second-best scoring option.

The Warriors will likely depend on Andrew Wiggins to step in as one of the primary offensive contributors behind Curry. The front office may make additional moves this offseason to fortify their backcourt.
