Dwayne Haskins reacts to being released by Washington Football Team
Dwayne Haskins hasn’t had the ideal second NFL season by any means.
Things took another discouraging turn on Monday afternoon after the Washington Football Team elected to part ways with Haskins. Following the move, Haskins voiced that he believes this NFL career path change will help him become a better person. (H/T Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk)
“My time with the WFT has unfortunately come to an end,” Haskins wrote, via Kimberley A. Martin of ESPN. “I thank the team & fans for the opportunity to play for the team I grew up rooting for. I take full responsibility for not meeting the standards of a NFL QB & will become a better man & player because of this experience.”
Haskins was in the second year of his four-year, $14.4 million rookie deal with roughly $8.5 million remaining in the contract. Haskins’ tenure with Washington quickly unfolded throughout the 2020 season.
The 23-year-old lost the starting job during the Week 5 loss to the LA Rams. Alex Smith assumed the starting role over the last several weeks while pushing the team into playoff contention.
Before stepping into the starter role again in Week 16 against the Carolina Panthers, Haskins created headlines for the wrong reasons. The Ohio State product received a $40,000 fine for violating the league’s COVID-19 policy as he was spotted maskless with a stripper.
His NFL future remains out of his hands as he may likely have to wait until next offseason to receive his next opportunity.
