Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie to miss rest of season with partially torn ACL
Through the first week of action, the Brooklyn Nets have gotten off to a promising start.
However, things took a disappointing turn as veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie suffered a partially torn ACL, according to ESPN.
Dinwiddie is scheduled to undergo surgery next week to repair the injury, which should force him to miss an extended portion of the season. He may have an opportunity to return this campaign depending on how his rehabilitation unfolds in the coming months.
Dinwiddie has proven to be a highly reliable backcourt option for the Nets over his first three seasons with the team. He has been one of the league’s most underrated talents that has continually been in the Sixth Man of the Year conversation.
The 27-year-old is off to a slow start this year as he’s averaging 6.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in 21.3 minutes per game. His role diminished this year as it was significantly lighter than last year, where he averaged a career-high 20.6 points in 31.2 minutes per game.
He’s currently in the second year of his three-year, $34.3 million deal, including a $12.3 million player option for the 2021-22 season. The injury could change how the Colorado product decides on the final year of his contract to grab financial security.
His absence leaves a significant hole in the Nets’ backcourt as it puts more pressure on Kyrie Irving to carry the load. First-year head coach Steve Nash will likely turn to Caris LeVert to assume Dinwiddie’s starter role.
