NFL Head Coach Carousel: Houston Texans Will Have Hard Time
The Houston Texans announced former New England Patriots executive Nick Caserio as their new general manager on Thursday. He has one hell of a job on his hands.
For starters, he’s their first actual general manager in two years. The Houston Texans fired head coach Bill O’ Brien, who was the de facto GM, mid season.
As well as that, the franchise’s biggest (and realistically, only) asset DeShaun Watson is unhappy and reportedly wants out.
The quarterback is reportedly ignoring owner Cal McNair over poor management and what he feels are broken promises.Â

DeShaun Watson has felt disillusioned in Houston ever since wide receiver and friend DeAndre Hopkins was traded to the Cardinals.
Houston also traded away it’s 2021 first round pick to the Miami Dolphins. That pick turned out to be the third overall selection.
Watson reportedly met with Cal McNair several times to provide input into potential general managers and coaches.
The quarterback was promised that McNair would consult with him before hiring anybody. Not only did the Texans owner not bother to interview anyone Watson suggested, he didn’t even inform Watson of his choice.
Watson found out about Caserio on social media, prompting him to Tweet; ‘some things never change’.
The Texans, along with the Falcons and the Lions, fired their coaches mid season. After the Jets, Jaguars and Chargers fired their coaches after the season, they are one of six teams with a vacancy.Â

Following a 4 – 12 season, the Texans need to improve. However, they likely won’t find a head coach capable of lifting them out of the mire.
If you’re a head coach, you’re going to look at the Jaguars and the Chargers before you consider the mess in Texas. At the very least, you’re going to wait and see if Watson stays so you can build around him.
Given his contract, it’s going to be complicated for Watson to get a trade. Nick Caserio’s first act in Houston must be to convince Watson that it’s still the right place for him.
