Wizards star Russell Westbrook expected to miss a week with quad injury

The former league MVP has hit another setback as he will miss at least the next week due to a left quadriceps injury, according to Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.

Westbrook is expected to be re-evaluated by the team at the end of the week. The injury occurred after he received repeated contact to the quadriceps area. His absence puts a major blow to the team’s hopes of digging out of the 2-8 start to the year.

Westbrook’s scoring is down from the usual level with 19.3 points per contest. However, he’s leading the league with 11.3 assists and 9.7 rebounds. The 32-year-old has struggled with his shooting, hitting 37.8 percent from the floor, 30.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 65.7 percent from the free-throw line in the first seven games.

Outside of All-Star guard Bradley Beal’s production, the Wizards have struggled to receive stable play. Beal will have to muscle a greater offensive load with Westbrook out of the mix. He is already leading the league with 35.0 points per contest on 48.9 percent shooting from the floor and 38.6 percent from distance.

Beal’s strong start to the year includes a career-high 60 points against the Philadelphia 76ers. He has scored north of 30 points in three out of his last four games played.
