Trent Brown Returns For Second Patriots Spell
Offensive tackle Trent Brown will return to the Patriots after an up and down spell with the Las Vegas Raiders.
It’s a calculated risk by New England, who have an advantageous salary cap situation compared to others. However, in this crucial offseason, they need to be smart with it.
Trent Brown played for New England in 2018 and started every game in the Super Bowl winning season. He then signed for a four-year, $66 million contract in March 2019 as an unrestricted free agent.
Trading for Trent Brown allows the Patriots to avoid a costly franchise tag repetition on starting left guard Joe Thuney.

Thuney (28), earned $14.7 millions under the franchise tag in 2020. His salary on the franchise tag this year would have been $17.7 million. With negotiations not coming together with the Patriots, he will likely hit free agency as a result.
At 6-foot-8, Brown is literally a sleeping giant. Due to injury he only appeared in 16 games in two seasons with the Raiders. Despite trading him, Las Vegas GM Mike Mayock knows he can be one of the best in the league.

“Trent’s whole thing is when he’s healthy, in shape and ready to go, he’s as dominant as any tackle in football, and he proved that early in the 2019 season. Since then, it’s kind of been a roller coaster,” he said last week.
“So really what he needs to do more than anything is get himself in the best shape of his life and come out and prove that he is a dominant tackle in the National Football League, and really that’s all it takes. If Trent gets in shape and stays committed, there’s not a better talent out there.”
