Patriots surprisingly agree to re-sign Cam Newton to one-year deal
The New England Patriots are coming off their worst season in recent memory. Bill Belichick and company struggled to get back on track as a result of the departure of Tom Brady. The former Patriots totem went on to win a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
With the Patriots trying to find a successor for Brady, the team signed former one-time NBA MVP Cam Newton, formerly of the Carolina Panthers. The Newton experiment didn’t go as planned as he struggled to look even close to his dominant form, but that didn’t prevent New England from bringing him back for one more season at a fairly high price, according to ESPN.

Cam Newton is re-signing with the Patriots on a one-year deal, sources have confirmed to ESPN.
The contract is worth up to $13.6 million, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. About $6 million of the deal is tied to incentives, a source told ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
Newton had arguably the worst season of his career as a passer in 2020 after playing in only two games in his final year with the Panthers. The veteran quarterback didn’t look like the same player. He struggled to make plays consistently, resulting in a 7-9 finish for the storied franchise.
The 31-year-old quarterback finished the season with 2,657 passing yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. However, he did impact on the ground rushing for 592 yards and 12 touchdowns on 137 carries.

Newton being a dual-threat and expanding the offense might be why he’s back for another season, but it remains to be seen whether he provides different results in the win column.
