2021 NFL Free Agency: 5 best fits for Jameis Winston
With quarterback Jameis Winston set to hit NFL free agency, we look at five teams which would be a great fit for his skills.
5. Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles make a ton of sense for Jameis Winston. After spending a year with the New Orleans Saints and sitting behind Drew Brees — Â as well as learning from head coach Sean Payton — Winston could be an ideal competitor alongside second-year man Jalen Hurts for the starting gig. Winston is only 27 years old and in 2019, his last year as a starter, threw for 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns against 30 interceptions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

4. Pittsburgh Steelers
This team would be higher on theist (as would Philadelphia) if not for its cap situation. The Steelers are locked into Ben Roethlisberger being under center in 2020, but then what? Mason Rudolph doesn’t exactly get anybody excited, and Winston will be in the prime of his career when 2021 rolls around. This would give head coach Mike Tomlin a chance to evaluate Winston for a year while the quarterback learns the system.
3. New York Jets
If the Jets decide to take a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft, they can simply trade Sam Darnold for a top-100 pick and then nab Winston as a quality backup. However, should Gang Green decide against taking a rookie and want to bring Darnold back, Winston is quality competition with the loser providing a terrific fallback option.

2. Denver Broncos
Similar to the Jets, Winston would provide both insurance and a potential upgrade at starter, depending on how general manager George Paton wants to play this offseason. Drew Lock has not been good through his first two seasons under center, and while he shows promise with traits, his overall play is lacking. Winston would likely be the aforementioned upgrade, but even if head coach Vic Fangio wanted to begin the season with Lock, he could always pivot if need be.
1. Chicago Bears
This is the one team that is both good and in need of a serious upgrade. The Bears only have Nick Foles to roll out right now, and after watching him the past few seasons with the Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars, it’s evident he’s no longer a viable starter on a playoff-caliber team. Chicago should be all over Winston, allowing him to come in on a short-term deal and then seeing how things go. If the Bears get lucky, Winston could make them a contender.
