Washington Football Team Could Remain Washington Football Team

The Washington Football team could continue calling itself the Washington Football Team from 2022 and beyond, according to Jason Wright.

The Washington Football Team is a placeholder name that has been in use since before the start of last season.

The decision to abandon the old, racially insensitive team name, was made during a controversial period in the team’s history. Washington had been under pressure to move away from the old name for quite some time.

Then, Covid-19 happened and with it, the resurgence of conversations about racial equality and social injustice in the United States. As well as that, controversy over owner Dan Snyder further tarnished the franchise’s credibility.

Jason Wright was hired as the NFL’s first black team president to lead a time of change for the Washington Football team. The medical department and front office have already been revamped. 

Washington will keep its red and burgundy colour scheme, but other than that it will be completely rebranded, with the franchise seeking input and submissions for a new logo.

As well as that, the ticketing, entertainment and parking are being overhauled. A coed dance team has replaced the cheerleader program, and the team’s charitable foundation has also been changed. 

The placeholder team name is rather bland. However, it appears to have grown on fans, who feel it connects them to their past. If Jason Wright can completely rebrand the organization while retaining its connection to its history, it will be a job incredibly well done.

“There are a set of folks that have warmed to the Washington Football Team,” Wright said.

“Some of the things that are emerging from that are the Washington Football Team has something that ties deeply to our history. It feels like that isn’t jettisoning all the things we have been in the past, whereas something that’s completely new might feel that way.

“It’s important for a substantial part of our fan base to feel that this is a continuation of something versus a complete reset, something brand new.”
