Zach Wilson knows Jets starting QB job ‘has to be earned’
The New York Jets pushed all their chips in the table after taking BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the third overall pick in this year’s draft.
Wilson is in a promising position to become the Jets’ long-term future under center. Before he heads into his first NFL training camp, the 21-year-old voiced that he will work to earn the starting quarterback spot.

“In this position, the coaches want to play the best player,” Wilson told reporters at rookie minicamp on Saturday, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. “That position has to be earned. I have to do what I’m supposed to do. That’ll take care of itself.”
The Jets’ selection of Wilson immediately placed expectations that he grabs the reins as the starter. New York also moved previous starter Sam Darnold that opened the door for him.
The competition at the position isn’t exactly the most competitive as the two other quarterbacks on the roster are 2020 fourth-round pick James Morgan and Mike White.

The BYU product will have every opportunity to earn the starting job in training camp. The Jets will likely make their decision concerning the starting job before the preseason. The franchise likely won’t let that situation remain unresolved that close to the 2021 season.
The Jets will likely ease Wilson along over the offseason to see how much of the playbook he can handle. There an expectation that he will start at some point in the 2021 campaign, if not to begin it.
Ultimately, New York will operate with what they believe is best for their long-term future.
