Jared Goff embracing ‘underdog’ label with Lions

The Detroit Lions decided to really shake things up this NFL offseason by trading Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for former No. 1 pick, Jared Goff.

With the team moving on from Stafford and turning to Goff, the consensus has been that the team is starting a rebuilding phase. Goff, however, doesn’t see it that way and is embracing the role of the underdog with his new team in Detroit, via Pro Football Talk.

“It’s always fun being the underdog,” Goff said. “Coming into games, teams can take you lightly. If that’s the case, we’re excited for it.”

Although the Lions aren’t expected to be much of a threat in the NFC next season, Goff claims the team has their own expectations for the 2021 campaign.

“We have our internal expectations as well,” Goff said. “For us, it’s the same as it’ll be for every other team. There’s one team happy at the end of the year, and we want to be that one team. We of course want to, of course, win the division first and then from there you go to the playoffs and win a championship. And that’s always the expectation, that’s always the goal.

“I know that hasn’t happened here in a long time, but that’s our expectation.”

Although the Lions aren’t expected to be a force to be reckoned with during this upcoming season, the NFL can be unpredictable and teams like Detroit could put it together unexpectedly. Goff will be highly motivated to prove his worth to the team as well as stick it to the Rams that weren’t willing to keep him around for another season.
