Patriots RB Damien Harris considered day-to-day after Week 5 injuries

The New England Patriots bounced back after a disappointing loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by edging out the Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon.

New England didn’t move through the game unscathed. The team lost second-year running back Damien Harris to an injury as he hurt his chest. He returned to the game but left again after hurting his ribs.

All that placed uncertainty over his status moving forward this season. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting via Pro Football Talk that tests on Harris’ injuries didn’t show any significant damage, and he’s considered day-to-day heading into Week 6 action against the red-hot Dallas Cowboys.

Harris has been a pivotal piece to the Patriots’ offense. So far this season, he has 63 carries for 230 rushing yards and two touchdowns. His role has shifted as the season has rolled along as New England has gone with the shared workload approach.

If Harris misses any time, expect Rhamondre Stevenson to get the shot to step in as the starter. The Oklahoma product had a strong showing in the preseason that created plenty of buzz around him.

His production hasn’t matched that hype through the first five games as he has only 25 rushing yards on 12 carries. Brandon Bolden and J.J. Taylor will also factor into the equation to help offset the workload.

Beyond that, the Patriots will lean on rookie Mac Jones to lead the offense. The Alabama product has performed admirably through his first five games, showing poise and strong command under center.

The Week 6 showdown against the Cowboys is another opportunity for him to demonstrate he can push the franchise toward playoff contention.
