Baker Mayfield Silences OBJ Noise With Season Best Game

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield turned in a game-winning performance against the Bengals at a pivotal time in the season.

The departure of WR Odell Beckham Jr. came at a point when the Browns were 4-4 on the season. The controversial week off the field turned into a crossroads moment on the field in Cincinnati.

The Browns delivered with a 41 – 16 win, and the most complete performance since last season. Baker Mayfield didn’t appear to miss OBJ as he completed 14-of-21 passes for two touchdowns. As well as that, he hit season highs in yards per completion (15.5) and passer rating (132.6).

Baker Mayfield did it all without throwing an interception, too.

The third year quarterback credited the unity within the Browns locker room for the win, and said they now need to play that way every week.

“This was a team win,” Mayfield said. “I’m very, very proud of this group.

“We’ll take wins any way we can get them,” Mayfield added. “I came here to win, I’ve said it over and over again. That’s why I was brought here, to change the culture, help change the culture, and continue to contribute towards that winning attitude. Our guys are bought in. They focused and did their job and that needs to be a week-to-week thing.”

Perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise. The stats show that Cleveland wins more without OBJ. They’re 14-15 with him and 9-5 without him since 2019.

“I wish him well. I really do,” Mayfield said of Odell Beckham Jr. “My feelings haven’t changed. I wish him well. From a personal standpoint, he’s a good friend of mine. We still haven’t talked but that doesn’t change things. I wish him well. I wish him the best in his career.”
