Commanders desperately looking for a new QB

The Washington Commanders struggled last season, and they know without an upgrade at quarterback, they’ll do so again in 2022.

Look everywhere. Free agency, trades, the draft. This is the credo for the Washington Commanders in their search for a quarterback over the next two months.

Since Ron Rivera became head coach two years ago, he’s dealt with a litany of signal-callers. It’s been either Ryan Fitzpatrick, Kyle Allen, Taylor Heinicke, Alex Smith or Dwayne Haskins Jr. Frankly, not good enough across the board.

Entering his third year with the team, Rivera understands it’s time to make a big move. Washington has reportedly called every club around the league, inquiring about Russell Wilson and, comically, Patrick Mahomes among others.

Earlier this week, Rivera talked with the media in Indianapolis at the NFL Scouting Combine and laid out his thoughts on potentially finding a quarterback early in the draft as well, via NFL.com:

“There’s several quality guys, several standout guys that we’re going to spend even more time on. (Monday) was our first opportunity, we got a chance to interview a number of them. We’ll continue the interview process, we’ll start looking to figure out which guys are we going to do privates with, which ones we’re going to bring in, which ones we’re going to attend (their pro days).

“It’s a different type of group because you’ve got everything from pure passers to guys that have pure athleticism. And so you’ve got to really look at that. You got to look at how it’s going to fit the type of players you have. Ideally, if you can find a guy that can do both, hey, you’re very fortunate. But again, you know, we’re picking at No. 11, and I promise you, these are all things that we’re looking at.”

So who are the options at No. 11? Malik Willis of Liberty is intriguing, a strong-armed, athletic talent who could become a new face of the franchise. Then there’s Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett, who many believe is the most ready to step in and start from the beginning.

Regardless of how it comes to pass, Washington desperately needs to get an upgrade at the sport’s most-important position. Without it, the Commanders are going to struggle to reach the playoffs once again.
