Veteran DT Gerald McCoy retires from the NFL after 11 seasons

Former star defensive tackle Gerald McCoy announced his retirement from the NFL after 11 seasons.

Gerald McCoy spent the bulk of his career with the Buccaneers. In Tampa Bay he earned six Pro Bowl selections, a First-Team All-Pro nod, and two Second-Team All-Pro selections in nine seasons.  He only trails Hall of Famers Derrick Brooks (11) and Warren Sapp (7) for most Pro Bowl nominations in franchise history.

The Buccaneers took McCoy with the third overall pick in the 2010 draft. He quickly became a significant factor, elevating himself to one of the league’s best defensive linemen.

His 54.5 sacks with Tampa Bay are the fourth-most in team history. As well as that, he posted 297 tackles, 140 quarterback hits, six forced fumbles, and 79 tackles for loss. McCoy was a strong foundational piece up front for the Buccaneers, posting at least 5.0 sacks seven times during his tenure.

He joined the Carolina Panthers in 2019 after his release from Tampa Bay, where he notched five sacks and 37 tackles in his lone campaign in Carolina.

McCoy joined the Dallas Cowboys but missed the entire 2020 season due to a ruptured quad that occurred during an offseason practice. He played one game for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021 before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

McCoy didn’t play in the 2022 season, which likely put retirement realistically on the table. He enters retirement without a single playoff game under his belt.

However, McCoy could one day receive an induction in the Buccaneers’ Ring of Honor after his highly productive and well-decorated tenure.
