NBA implements two crucial rule changes for the 2023-24 season
The NBA has instituted additional rule changes that will be added for the 2023-24 season.
The board of governors has approved two rules that will feature a second coach’s challenge if the first is successful along with in-game flopping violations resulting in technical foul free throws.
The NBA had previously allowed coaches to possess only one challenge in a game. However, the rule change gives them more incentive to use it to potentially garner a second one at their disposal.

The new format follows more of the NFL guidelines, which gives each team two challenges per game with an opportunity to earn a third one if both are successful. Over the last several years, the NBA has caught much public flak for the officiating regarding missed or incorrect calls.
The league responded by adding a coach’s challenge, which opened the door for usage to correct calls, often in late-game situations. The potential addition of a second challenge adds another wrinkle that could prove to be highly beneficial.

Along with that, the NBA’s decision to add punishment to flopping has been a long time coming. The league is looking to minimize the instances it occurs in a game.
The NBA had already put in a rule that flopping would result in a substantial fine. The league now has added that an occurrence of flopping would lead to a non-unsportsmanlike technical foul that gives the opposing team free throws.
However, the flopping violations still can’t be reviewed by a coach’s challenge. They can be added to another call during a review of another play.
