49ers GM John Lynch says most likely option is Trey Lance stays

The San Francisco 49ers didn’t wait too long to make a decision about their quarterback depth chart after their Week 1 battle with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as the storied franchise is sticking with second-year man Brock Purdy as their starter under center.

That was the most expected outcome. Purdy has looked good through training camp and appears to be back to form after an elbow injury last year.

The real question was what the team was going to do when it comes to Purdy’s backup. San Francisco brought in a solid option in the form of veteran Sam Darnold. Although Darnold struggled during his stint with the Carolina Panthers, he may be more suited to being a backup in the NFL as opposed to a starter, and that seems to be the case in San Francisco.

Darnold has earned the job as No. 2 on the depth chart, which puts former first-round pick Trey Lance at No. 3, shedding some doubt on his future with the team moving forward. There has been some talk of Lance being traded, but it appears that general manager John Lynch believes the most likely scenario is he stays put via Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News.

Even though Lynch says that Lance will likely be staying put, there’s always a chance that a team comes out of nowhere and shows interest in the young quarterback, as it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that he can still be a star in this league.

However, Lance hasn’t done much to improve his trade value as he doesn’t appear to have improved much, if at all, since getting injured last season, so it remains to be seen whether a team will come calling.
