Chiefs uncertain superstar tight end Travis Kelce will play Week 1
The Kansas City Chiefs have hit a bit of a speed bump heading into the 2023 NFL season, with the defending Super Bowl champions potentially set to be without star tight end Travis Kelce against the Detroit Lions on Thursday night.
As if the Chiefs weren’t dealing with a big enough problem in their contract talks with star defensive tackle Chris Jones, Kansas City now has to potentially deal with not having its best receiver and defensive player for the team’s season opener at home.

Apparently, Kelce suffered a knee injury on Tuesday, which will likely alter his status for the game against the Lions, with head coach Andy Reid saying the following about what they’ll do without the perennial Pro Bowler via ESPN.
“The next guy steps in and we roll,” Reid said when asked how the game plan might change without Kelce. “That’s what you do if [he doesn’t play].”
Obviously, the Chiefs are a better football team with Kelce on the gridiron, but if he can’t go, Blake Bell is going to try to help fill the void.
“He’s one of the toughest, and we can’t wait for him to get back out there,” Bell said of Kelce. “We’re just going to keep doing what we do, and the rest of the guys in the room will be ready to roll.”
Although the Lions aren’t considered a title contender, Detroit will be a tough opponent for Kansas City and will look to take advantage of Kelce and Jones potentially not being on the field on Thursday.
