Chiefs, All-Pro DT Chris Jones agree to one-year deal ending holdout
The Kansas City Chiefs got off to a rough start to the 2023 NFL season. The defending Super Bowl champions entered Week 1 agsint the Detroit Lions without two of their best players. Travis Kelce is currently dealing with a knee injury that kept him out of Thursday’s game. Meanwhile, All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones was still holding out for a new contract.
Kelce’s status for Week 2 still remains up in the air. However, the Chiefs will have Jones back on the field after he agreed to a one-year deal with the team. It wasn’t the long-term deal Jones coveted, although it’s said to be a substantial pay boost for the 2023 season.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said the following about Jones ending his holdout and agreeing to a one-year deal via ESPN.
“Chris is an elite player in this league and over the last seven years, he’s really developed into a leader on our team,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said in a statement. “He’s been instrumental to our success and Super Bowl championship runs and it was a priority for us to keep him in a Chiefs uniform. I’d like to thank Chris and his representation, Michael and Jason Katz, for their desire and patience to get this done. Through this process two things were obvious, Chris wanted to be a Chief and the Katz brothers worked diligently on his behalf.”
Fortunately for the defending champions, this off-the-field distraction is a thing of the past. The team can now solely focus on doing everything within its power to win a second straight Super Bowl title.
