Jets agree to release veteran running back Dalvin Cook
As the New York Jets head into the final week of the regular season, the team decided to part ways with former Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook.
The writing had been on the wall throughout much of the season as he received sparse playing time. Cook tallied 214 rushing yards on 67 carries with a mere 3.2 yards per carry, which is 1.4 yards below his career average.
After garnering 13 carries in Week 1, he didn’t reach double-digit rush attempt in the final 14 games he played with New York. Cook failed to rush for more 50 yards in any game while posting fewer than 30 rushing yards all but twice.
He struggled to garner a consistent role in the offense despite the need for stability due to the lack of stable quarterback play. The Jets initially hoped that Cook could be the missing piece in the backfield that could help push them toward the playoffs.
However, Aaron Rodgers‘ season-ending injury in the season opener quickly changed the direction of the franchise. Cook didn’t receive ample playing time to showcase that he can still be a productive offensive factor.

Instead, he was relegated to a backup role behind Breece Hall, who has 816 rushing yards on 186 carries for 4.4 yards per attempt and four touchdowns.
Cook will now have the opportunity to latch onto a playoff team before the postseason begins next week. He could step into a situation where he provides additional stability in the running game.
