Jayden Daniels ready to prove his worth to Commanders

After weeks of anticipation, the Washington Commanders announced that rookie Jayden Daniels will be the starting quarterback for the 2024 season.

Daniels spent much of training camp working with the first team in practice, and his encouraging play in the first two games of the preseason further cemented his status as the starter.

“They didn’t want to go out there and [immediately say] hey, you’re a starter,” Daniels said via ESPN. “I haven’t earned anything. What I did in college was great. Now it’s time for a new slate, clean slate. I have to prove it not only to myself, not only to the coaches, but to my teammates. If DQ is going to preach competition and you’ve got to earn everything, man, they can’t come in and just give me the job right away. So, I got to have to go earn it.”

Daniels had stiff competition from Marcus Mariota to begin training camp but separated himself as time progressed along. Through the first two preseason games, he completed 12 of 12 passes for 123 yards and posted a rushing touchdown.

Since his arrival, he has shown poise in the pocket while demonstrating an ability to extend plays with his legs. Commanders teammates and coaches have praised his accuracy and ball placement.
