Drake Maye remains in limbo in Patriots QB situation
As the regular season inches closer, the New England Patriots still haven’t settled their starting quarterback situation.
However, rookie Drake Maye continues to take steps toward locking in the spot after an encouraging showing in the Patriots’ 14-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night. Maye completed 6-of-11 passes for 47 yards and rushed for 15 yards on four attempts with a touchdown.
The North Carolina’s product’s numbers could have been much bigger if wide receiver Javon Baker hadn’t dropped a deep pass in the third quarter. Despite that, first-year head coach Jerod Mayo voiced praise toward Maye.

“Stepping up into pressure, I thought he did a better job overall with using his legs and really extending plays,” Mayo said Friday via ESPN.
At this juncture, Maye remains the backup behind Jacoby Brissett, who inked a one-year, $8 million deal over the offseason. Brissett continues to take the first-team snaps in training camp and the preseason. He is coming off completing 3-of-7 passes for 17 yards against the Eagles.
The Patriots appear more than comfortable rolling forward with him as the starter, which would alleviate the initial pressure on Maye to begin his rookie campaign.

New England’s one more preseason game is on Aug. 25 against the Washington Commanders, in which the team is expected to play both Brissett and Maye.
The next few weeks could be pivotal in determining Maye’s status ahead of the 2024 season. Until then, Brissett appears to have the inside track to start.
