Panthers QB Bryce Young reacts to getting benched
Carolina Panthers second-year quarterback Bryce Young will head into Week 3 action benched with backup Andy Dalton getting the start against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Since the move, Young has voiced he was shocked by the decision made by head coach Dave Canales.
“As a competitor, obviously not how you dream of what’s going to happen,” Young said in his first interview since the decision was made on Monday via ESPN. “It wasn’t something I necessarily was expecting. Obviously, it was not something that was great to hear.
“It’s on me to put them in that situation.”
Young has struggled out of the gate to the 2024 season, quickly seeing the Panthers fall to a 0-2 while he has struggled to produce. He ranks last among starters with 245 passing yards with zero touchdown passes and three interceptions and holds a 9.4 quarterback rating.
The Alabama product hasn’t yielded an encouraging showing that has the Panthers’ faith in him as the future under center. Instead, it’s led to him being pulled as the starter after only two weeks of the season.

Although the situation doesn’t look promising at the moment, Young hasn’t questioned his long-term future in Carolina. He has shifted his attention toward taking accountability for his lackluster performance.
“I had a lot of plays last year and in the first two games,” Young said. “For the most part, every snap hit my hands and I didn’t do enough. I take accountability for that. There’s a long list of things that I wish was better and I’ll continue to work and grow and improve and be better at.
“Everyone has circumstances. If I went out there and played better and won games . . . and at the end of the day that falls on me and that didn’t happen . . . we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”
Meanwhile, Dalton will have the chance to make his case as the starter moving forward against the Raiders, who are coming off an impressive road win against the Baltimore Ravens.
