Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes: ‘Hard to say’ if he’ll play vs. Texans
The Kansas City Chiefs moved a game closer to clinching the top seed in the AFC playoff picture, but it came at a cost, with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes injuring his ankle in the 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns.
In the fourth quarter, Mahomes suffered the injury after getting hit while throwing an incomplete pass on fourth down. The two-time league MVP exited the game and didn’t return.
It has now led to an uncertain status for this week’s game against the Houston Texans.
“It’s hard to say right now,” Mahomes said via ESPN. “You still [have the] adrenaline rolling and usually it’s kind of the day after when you kind of get a good sense of it. I feel like I could have finished the game in different circumstances, but I thought the smart decision … was to put Carson Wentz in.
“… You just do what you have to do to get back, and I think that’s the most important thing. And now we just get back to the rehab part, the treatment part, and try to get ourselves ready on a short week against a good football team.”
If Mahomes is unable to go, backup Carson Wentz will likely get the start. In his brief showing against the Browns, Wentz completed both of his passes for 20 yards in the Chiefs’ final two drives.

Kansas City will move cautiously with Mahomes’ injury to avoid a setback or it lingering into the playoffs. If the Chiefs hope to have a realistic shot to become the first team to win three straight Super Bowls, it will have to be with their star quarterback leading the charge.
