Kareem Hunts returns to Chiefs on one-year deal

The Kansas City Chiefs inked running back Kareem Hunt to a one-year deal that is worth up to $2.5 million.

Hunt is in his second stint with the Chiefs after he was acquired early last season following the team placing Isiah Pacheco on the injured reserve list.

The 29-year-old proved to be a dependable option, posting 728 rushing yards and seven touchdowns along with 23 receptions for 176 receiving yards. He also added 117 rushing yards and two touchdowns in three playoff games.

Hunt will likely serve as the primary backup to Pacheco while offseason addition Elijah Mitchell will add much-needed depth.

Since his breakout rookie campaign, posting 1,327 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, he hasn’t experienced the same level of production. His off-the-field involvement in pushing a woman in a video in 2018 led to him being placed on the commissioner’s exempt list and then being released by the Chiefs.

He spent five years with the Cleveland Browns, where he recorded 2,285 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns along with 249 receptions for 2,066 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns.

Hunt remains a dependable backfield option behind Pacheco. However, Kansas City will likely lean on Pacheco as the primary factor, but his recent injury issues lend to Hunt playing a prominent role.

Pacheco is coming off missing 10 games due to a fractured fibula, limiting him to only 310 rushing yards and one touchdown. He’s heading into a crucial 2024 season as he’s in the final year of his four-year, $3.7 million deal rookie contract.
