Saints QB Derek Carr announces retirement from the NFL

The New Orleans Saints are moving through a sudden shift at quarterback after former Pro Bowler Derek Carr announced his retirement due to persistent shoulder issues.

The Saints are left picking up the pieces, attempting to figure out who will lead the offense for the 2025 season. It’s put rookie Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener in a competition to earn that vaunted spot.

“We’re going to let all three of these guys roll, and they’ve all earned these opportunities,” New Orleans coach Kellen Moore said via ESPN. “We’ll let Jake, Spencer and Tyler, all three, go through this process. Again, we’ll play patience, let these guys compete, let them get into training camp and naturally these [competitions will] take care of itself.”

New Orleans appears ready to let the offseason program and training camp help determine who could get the first crack at the starting job. Rattler and Haener may receive the early upper hand due to their familiarity with the roster personnel and NFL experience.

However, Shough may get a legit shot to vie for first-team snaps over the offseason.

Carr’s sudden retirement does take the team down a path that it wasn’t ready to venture just yet. The 34-year-old was dealing with a shoulder injury that wouldn’t improve even after surgery, but it wasn’t initially expected that he would miss significant time, let alone retire.

The one silver lining for the Saints is that there remains much of the offseason ahead for the team to see which remaining quarterback on the roster gives them the best chance to win.
