The New England Patriots’ tight end depth is looking a bit concerning. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Aaron Hernandez underwent shoulder surgery this offseason and is expected to miss the Patriot’s OTAs and minicamp.

Fortunately, it’s not all bad news. Rapoport expects Hernadez to be back in time for training camp and the first game of the season.

Hernandez has big a major part of the New England offense, catching 175 passes for 18 touchdowns and a shade less than 2,000 yards in his three years in the league. When he is healthy, the 6-foot-5 tight end gives quarterback Tom Brady a major target in the middle of the field and a big boost in pass protection.

The downside is that Hernandez’s counterpart, Rob Gronkowski, may be expected to miss a bit more time. According to ESPN Boston, the 23-year old phenom has had lingering shoulder issues for the past two seasons and will likely miss training camp. Some even speculate that Gronkowski will miss Week 1 of the NFL season.

When both Gronkowski and Hernandez are on the field, they create a major mismatch problem for any defense. Their elite size and athleticism make them almost un-guardable, making Brady’s job a lot easier. Last season, the two combined for more than 100 catches and 16 touchdowns. Since Wes Welker has opted to sign with the Denver Broncos, their contribution to the Patriots is invaluable.

If Gronkowski isn’t able to play in Week 1, the Patriots’ offense takes a major hit. They’ll likely have to position Hernandez at the No. 1 receiver position and bring in either Jake Ballard or Michael Hoomanawanui to take up the second-string position.

We will update you more on the injuries to Hernandez and Gronkowski as the news becomes available.
