Red Sox-Indians Recap and Preview
The surprising 9-4 Boston Red Sox came away with a big 7-2 win over the Cleveland Indians last night, riding a tidal wave of emotion surrounding the tragic events at the Boston Marathon on Monday. The team hung a “No. 617” jersey in their locker room before the game to signify Boston’s area code, and were greeted in the visitor’s ballpark with a rendition of their signature tune, “Sweet Caroline.”
“It was just something to let them know, they’re out of sight right now, but definitely not out of mind,” Boston outfielder Jonny Gomes said. “We just wanted to let people know we’ve got a heavy heart over here.”
“Given what’s taken place, this is fresh on everyone’s minds,” Boston manager John Farrell said. “Even though we may not be in Boston right now, we carry this with us. We feel very much a part of the city and the community and everything that goes on there. We have not forgotten by any means.”
Despite all of the emotions surrounding the game, the Red Sox played a clean, well-pitched game, and pounded Cleveland’s Ubaldo Jimenez out of the game in the second inning. (The Sox scored all seven of their runs in the second.) Jimenez, once supposed to be the ace of the Indians rotation after one huge season in Colorado, was truly abysmal, giving up seven earned runs and walking five batters in just two innings. In an embarrassing bit of history, he’s the first Indians pitcher to do that in 20 years. In other weird bit of trivia, this game was also the first nine-inning affair since 1900 that featured 25+ strikeouts and 15+ walks. Still, the overwhelming emotion of the night was the true story on Tuesday.
“You get so ramped up for a baseball game because it’s so important to us and then you look up and realize why you’re having a moment of silence,” former Boston manager and current Indians skipper Terry Francona said. “If you need perspective, it gives it to you in a hurry.”
Tonight’s game could go a different way for the Red Sox, as they’ll face Indians ace Justin Masterson. Masterson is 3-0 this season with a .41 ERA, while Boston’s starter tonight, Alfredo Aceves, is 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA. The Indians are listed as -175 money line favorites in this one.
