Miguel Cabrera on pace to set new offensive records

The Major League Baseball season is just 1/3 complete but the Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera has put up numbers that many players would be happy with for a full 162 game season.

The talented third baseman has had an incredible two months to start the season.

He and his teammates are currently in first place in the American League Central division ahead of the Cleveland Indians.

Cabrera just completed a month of May for the record books. Cabrera hit 12 home runs in the month to lead the majors along with 33 runs batted in. His 12 homers in May tied a team record originally set in 1969 by Willie Horton.

During the month Cabrera had 44 hits. His 44 hits were the most during May for Detroit since 1976 when speedy Ron LeFlore had 45.

Through 53 games, Cabrera has 61 RBIs which ties the total by Hank Greenberg in 1937 as the Tigers’ second most every over the first 53 games of the season. The Tigers record is 64 in 53 games set in 1935 by Greenberg himself.

Cabrera also has 81 hits in his first 53 games played up through the end of May. The month of May was very impressive for Cabrera, but combining April and May gives up even greater numbers.

According to an online baseball statistics site, Cabrera became the first player in the history of the major leagues to start June with a batting average of at least .340, more than 14 homers and more than 59 runs batted in.

Cabrera started June with a batting average of .372 with 16 homers and 61 runs batted in. He started June off on the right foot as well with 1 hit and 4 RBIs on June 1.Cabrera now is batting .369, has an on-base percentage of .445 and a slugging percentage of .676. The Detroit infielder leads the AL with his .369 batting average is second in the AL in home runs and leads the league in RBI’s by 14.

The regular season is very long. The hot days of summer are approaching and those can have an effect on a player’s statistics.

However, if Cabrera can continue playing at this rate, he could conceivably but up some of the best offensive numbers of all time.

At his current pace, Cabrera is projected to hit 51 home runs and have 195 RBIs. Of course, that would be a difficult thing to accomplish but he is a third of the way there.
