Packers Enjoy Record-Setting Day in Win Over Redskins

After getting burned by the 49ers a week ago, the Green Bay Packers returned home to face another talented offense on Sunday, but the Packers’ offense was the only one smiling at the end of the day, after making a run at the record books.

The Pack notched their first victory of the season yesterday in convincing fashion over the Washington Redskins 38-20. Aaron Rodgers threw for a career-high 480 yards – which also tied Matt Flynn’s franchise record – and tossed four touchdowns in what many would argue was the best single-game performance of his career.

Although Rodgers was certainly the standout, he humbly credited his teammates for turning big throws into even bigger plays.

“We were able to catch the ball well, had yards after the catch and we were able to run the ball better than we have in a long time,” Rodgers said, according to ESPN.com.

The Packers certainly found success through the air, but they did on the ground too, as James Starks rushed for 132 yards, marking the first time in NFL history in which a team has had a 450-yard passer and 125-yard rusher in the same game.

For the second straight week, Washington dug itself too deep a hole to climb out of, trailing 31-0 midway through the third quarter. And for the second straight week, the Skins rallied as Robert Griffin III threw for 320 yards and three scores, but once again, it was not nearly enough as Washington fell to 0-2 on the season.

“I thought we almost had to play error-free football, play one of our better games,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said, “and probably did just the opposite in the first half.”

Though it’s still early in the year, this is certainly not the start last season’s NFC East champions envisioned.

“We can’t really put our finger on what it is, and that’s the real frustrating part,” Griffin said.

The offense’s slow starts in the first two games have put the Skins in tough spots, but the defense is really to blame for the defeats. Washington has allowed more than 400 total rushing yards so far this season and 71 points, so until they figure out how to stop opponents, things could be a little rough for them this year.

While it’s not quite time to jump off the Redskins wagering bandwagon, it’s certainly time to climb on board with Green Bay. The Packers have looked as good as ever recently – especially on offense – so look for them to stay hot and cover some point total overs in games coming up on their schedule, including next week against the Lions.
