Conference USA Football Roundup: Tulane and Tulsa in a nail-biter and More
It was an interesting week for Conference USA football. Â Tulane continued to keep pace with Rice in the C-USA West Division but barely. Â Meanwhile, North Texas continued to move toward a big come back staying just a game behind Rice and Tulane. Â Here are the highlights from this week in C-USA football.
RICE 45, UTEP 7
Rice continued to hold its grip over the C-USA West Division with a huge 45-7 win over UTEP.
Rice quarterback Taylor McHargue finished up with four touchdown passes. Â McHargue hooked up with Jordan Taylor on more than one occasion throughout the game including on three of those four touchdowns. Â Taylor put up 185 yards on just four receptions.
Rice remains undefeated within the division. Â However, they still have Tulane hot on their heels.
TULANE 14, TULSA 7
It was a battle between two defenses in this hotly contested game between Tulane and Tulsa. Â It was Tulane’s defense that would win out, 14-7.
Tulane’s defense was able to hold Tulsa at zero in the second half. Â Tulane’s defense forced four turnovers that included three interceptions. Â However, Tulsa grabbed two turnovers of their. In the end Tulane’s defense would win the game for their team, though.
Tulane remains undefeated in the division, as does Rice. Â Something will eventually give between these two team. Â The winner of the C-USA West Division could very well be decided at the end of the season (November 30) when Tulane takes on Rice.
NORTH TEXAS 55, SOUTHERN MISS 14
Do not be so quick to look at the C-USA West Division as a race between Tulane and Rice. Â North Texas has now won three in a row and would only need a loss from Rice and Tulane and a win for themselves to take the No. 1 spot in the division.
On Saturday, North Texas dominated Southern Miss. Â Derek Thompson threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns and also put up a rushing TD. Â Running backs Antoinne Jimmerson, Brandin Byrd and Reggie Pegram also each punched in a TD for North Texas.
The biggest threat left to North Texas would seem to be Tulsa who they play on November 30. Â However, they also have UTSA and UTEP left on the schedule.
