Commanders RB Austin Ekeler’s status has been revealed
The Washington Commanders have suffered a significant blow on the offensive side of the football, with veteran Austin Ekeler going down with a severe injury in Week 2.
During the Week 2 showdown with the Green Bay Packers, Ekeler went down with a non-contact injury, which rarely has a good outcome. Ultimately, it was determined that Ekeler suffered a torn Achilles tendon that will result in him missing the rest of the 2025 NFL season, according to John Keim of ESPN.
Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler suffered a torn right Achilles and will miss the remainder of the season, a source told ESPN on Saturday.
Following the dire diagnosis of his injury and knowing he would be out for the rest of the 2025 campaign, Ekeler took to social media to thank everyone for their support during this tough time for the veteran running back.
“Thank you all for the love and well wishes. I appreciate you all,” Ekeler said on his Instagram account.
Along with Ekeler expressing his appreciation, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn knew that Ekeler’s absence would prove costly for his team moving forward.
“That will be significant,” Washington coach Dan Quinn said after the game. “He provides a lot of unique things for us.”
With Ekeler on the mend and set to miss the rest of the season, the Commanders’ coaching staff will have to turn to other players on the depth chart at the running back position. Rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt will likely be leaned on from here on out, with Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez backing him up.

Only time will tell how the loss of Ekeler impacts the Commanders moving forward. It’s obviously not a great development for a team coming off a disappointing loss to the Packers.
