Announcement In Jameis Winston Case Coming Thursday

This ugly chapter could finally be coming to an end for Heisman hopeful Jameis Winston

According to tweets posted Wednesday afternoon by the Tallahassee Democrat’s Jeffrey Burlew and Jennifer Portman, an announcement regarding potential charges against Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston and the alleged rape of a fellow student last December is imminent.

State Attorney Willie Megs will make the announcement via a press conference on Thursday at 2:00 p.m., adding that all investigative tools have now been exhausted. The press conference will be broadcast in its entirety on, among many outlets, ESPN.

Naturally the network has already been hyping the event. ESPN’s Brett McMurphy tweeted this shortly after the news broke:

Although nothing will be known for sure until tomorrow, there are strong indications that the case against Winston will be dropped and charges will not be pursued. Winston’s attorney, Timothy Jansen, told WCTV in Tallahassee that he hopes Heisman voters will wait until tomorrow before voting.

Though the attorney maintains he’s as much in the dark as the rest of us. Said Jansen, “We’re hoping and waiting like everyone else, and we believe the evidence will exonerate Mr. Winston.”

There’s absolutely no reason to think he’d suggest anything of the sort if he felt there was a chance that charges were forthcoming. The timing of the investigation has not sat well with Jansen, who has said he’s been “deeply troubled” of the 11-month delay since the initial report was made.

One internet gossip site doesn’t feel bound by waiting on the official announcement tomorrow. TerezOwens says a source close to the investigation told them, “Press conference tomorrow at 2pm et. No charges will be filed.”

If the decision not to file charges is what’s announced tomorrow, that’s very good news for Winston, who had been the definitive Heisman Trophy frontrunner until this story broke. Voting for the award doesn’t conclude until Saturday of this week and no one was able to establish himself as a clear alternative during this mess.

Football implications aside, it’s unlikely tomorrow will be the final word on the matter. Many questions about the suspicious timing of the massively delayed investigation and the source of the initial leak to the media.

If those aren’t addressed on Thursday, you can bet the Winston camp will be looking for answers.
