Carr, Teammates Pick Up Mountain West Conference Honors

While he will miss out on THE award of the season on Saturday night, #20 Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr has still received his share of honors this week for his 2013 play. On Thursday Carr was selected as Athlon Sports College Football’s 2013 Postseason All-America team. He landed on the third-team offense.

Earlier in the week, he was also named as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete finalist. He did not receive the honor, the William V. Campbell Trophy or as its fondly referred to as the Academic Heisman. John Urschel, a Penn State defensive lineman, was the winner.

Don’t feel bad, Carr still received a top honor this week, the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year award. It was his second consecutive time to win it. During  the season, Carr set Mountain West and school records for his passing yards (4,866) and touchdown passes (48). Factor in his total offense at 4,983 yards and he sits as the nation’s leader.

But the week didn’t all belong to Carr, his wide receiver Davante Adams grabbed his own awards as well. He joined Carr on Athlon’s third team and for his second straight time, the all-conference first team. With his 23 touchdown catches, he set both school and conference records.

In addition, the Bulldogs offensive lineman Austin Wentworth and free safety Derron Smith were also named to the all-conference’s first team–again for a second consecutive season.

Smith was the league’s leader with his six interceptions; this tied him at No. 4 nationally. As for Wentworth, his offensive line only gave up 11 sacks. Fresno State’s offense sat with a No.3 national ranking with its 570.6 yards per game and at 45.3 points, No. 5 in the country.

On the  All-Mountain West second team, Fresno State had a good showing with Josh Harper (wide receiver), Marcel Jensen (tight end), Tyeler Davison (nose guard), Ejiro Ederaine (outside linebacker) and Isaiah Burse (return specialist) all making the list, according to the Fresnobee.com.

The Bulldogs (11-1, 7-1) have already returned to practice as they prepare for their Dec. 21 Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl game against #25 USC (9-4, 6-3). Vegas has USC taking the win (-6.5, 62 o/u).
In addition to all eyes on how USC does under its third coach for the season, Clay Helton, they’ll also be on Carr and his play as he prepares for the 2014 NFL draft.
He’ll have some competition in a talent-heavy draft for quarterbacks but his numbers and consistency paint a compelling story, not to mention the family gene pool.
Back in 2002 his older brother David Carr, also a Fresno State quarterback, went as the No. 1 overall pick to the Houston Texans. This represented a first No. 1 draft pick in the team’s history.

Fast forward to the present and the Texans again need some quarterback help. Could history repeat itself in April by taking another Carr for quarterback in the first spot?

This week, NFL.com reported that a general manager told reporter Ian Rapoport he sees Carr going as the No. 1 player in the upcoming draft. The question had then been posed on whether the Texans would select Carr. The unidentified general manager had responded, “He’ll blow up at the Combine” RT @NJBeerNerd: @RapSheet they’ll take Bridgewater. Carr not surpassing Teddy.”

Meanwhile on Friday, stories came out that Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is considering staying in college for one more season. Questions have lingered about the player’s build at 6’3″ and 205 pounds but they are no doubts about his good play.

For Carr, he’s 6’3″ and 218 with a “sturdy frame’, great arm strength, and mobility. And as they say, stats don’t lie.

The icing on the cake could come with a big win in the Las Vegas bowl game and more records by Carr.

As we enter Week 15 for the NFL, the Texans do sit at the top for the 2014 draft with their 2-11 record. This week they’ll play the Indianapolis Colts and will lose again (-5, 45.5 o/u).
