Mets Take Three of Four From Cardinals
The New York Mets have an interesting team this season. They have a lot of familiar names who have all known success in the past. Most have also known failure as well. If players such as Bartolo Colon, Kyle Farnsworth, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Curtis Granderson and Bobby Abreu. If these guys all play at their best, these Mets could be tough. Right now, they are two games above .500 at 12-10 which is not bad for a team who started the season losing three straight at home to the Washington Nationals. They just finished a four game series with the defending National League Champion St. Louis Cardinals with a 4-1 victory. The win was the third in the series for the Mets as they allowed St. Louis only six runs in the four games. Colon got the win today, going seven innings and allowing only one run. Dice-K got his first career save working a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
New York has been winning games against some rough competition thus far. In their 22 games they have played the Nats, the Cincinnati Reds, the Atlanta Braves in two series, the Los Angeles Angels, and St. Louis. The only bad team they have faced so far would be the Arizona Diamondbacks. The schedule is not slacking up anytime soon as the Miami Marlins come in next and then they take off to face the Philadelphia Phillies, Colorado Rockies, and the Marlins in a ten game trip. Then it is the Phillies, the New York Yankees, the Nats again and then the Los Angeles Dodgers. If the Mets can get through that stretch still hanging around the .500 mark, they will have done well.
If the Mets pitching stays as good as it has so far, they may well do it. The really encouraging thing is that Zach Wheeler has yet to perform like the Mets expected. So far his record is 1-2 and his ERA is over 5.00. Imagine where the Mets would be if he were the dominating pitcher he can be and if they have a healthy Matt Harvey.
The Braves currently lead the N. L. East at 14-7 with the Nationals and Mets tied for second at 12-10. The Phils are 10-11 and the Marlins are 10-12. Right now, this looks like baseball’s toughest division. That is a huge surprise considering how bad the Mets and Marlins have been in recent years. This weekend the two get together for the first time this season. The Marlins have been one of the best offensive teams in the National League so far, but most of that damage has been done at home. On the road, the Fish have struggled so far. Look for the Mets to continue their winning ways this weekend.
