Mike D’Antoni Mercifully Resigns As Lakers Coach

On Wednesday night the Los Angeles Lakers announced that head coach Mike D’Antoni had resigned two tumultuous seasons with the team. His tenure was doomed from the start, with D’Antoni coming into an impossible situation after once promising talks to bring Phil Jackson back in broke down.

Even if that’s not exactly how things went down, the bumbling of Jim Buss, the Lakers resident in-house boob who would struggle in the most menial of positions if he weren’t lucky enough to have been born a Buss.

Though D’Antoni was nice enough to save the team the team a little trouble, his departure was all but a foregone conclusion after the Lakers had their worst season since relocating to Los Angeles more than 50 years ago. Add that to his inability to make nice with Kobe Bryant, and you’ve got a dead man walking.

Naturally the organization had warm words for D’Antoni, who has really suffered enough.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said via a statement, “Given the circumstances, I don’t know that anybody could have done a better job than Mike did the past two seasons. On behalf of the Lakers, we thank Mike for the work ethic, professionalism and positive attitude that he brought to the team every day. We wish him the best of luck.”

In any other week a Lakers coaching change would be a momentous news story—for a few days, at least. But coming on the heels of the explosive Donald Sterling scandal that has played out in the same building, this time it feels a little anticlimactic.

Not that anticlimactic is necessarily a bad thing right now.
