Josh Gordon Taking A Year Off Football To Spend More Time With His Weed
Just one day after igniting their beleaguered fan base by drafting quarterback Johnny Manziel (on the advice of a homeless man), the Cleveland Browns were delivered in an unfortunate blow with the news that superstar wide receiver Josh Gordon is facing a season-long suspension for another failed drug test.
This time it’s for marijuana, last season he was suspended two games without pay for using cough syrup with codeine. This is nothing new to Gordon, who tested positive for marijuana twice at Baylor and was ultimately dismissed from the team. He then transferred to Utah, where he never had the opportunity to play because he…wait for it…failed a drug test.
At least he’s learned some lessons along the way. On the bright side, Gordon will have a lot more time to focus on drugs this year if his suspension holds up.
ESPN’s Outside the Lines, which first reported the news, noted that the Browns organization—namely owner Jimmy Haslam and general manager Ray Farmer—made their first round draft selections with full knowledge of Gordon’s looming suspension. The team’s coaching staff, however, was completely in the dark.
When contacted by ESPN for comment, Gordon said: “That’s something you’re going to have to talk to [agent] Drew Rosenhaus about. I really don’t know anything about it.” When pressed about a potential appeal he added, “I’m going to have to find out about that later. You need to call Drew,†before hanging up.
“Drew†being NFL super agent, and noted dirt bag, Drew Rosenhaus. Naturally he had no comment on the matter.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Cleveland. They actually traded down with the Buffalo Bills, who moved up to select Clemson standout wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Though the Browns were handsomely rewarded by the Bills, they won’t reap the benefits until next season.
That leaves them precariously thin at the position. Particularly with veteran Nate Burleson, who was signed as a free agent, bein out for the next few months with a fractured armed sustained in OTAs.
A less than an ideal situation for an unestablished quarterback.
