Patrick Peterson, Richard Sherman Continue Needling Each Other Via Twitter

This week Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson was signed to a five-year extension worth $70 million, $48 million of which is guaranteed. The very generous deal exceeds those of the Seattle Seahawks’ Richard Sherman and Cleveland Browns’ Joe Haden, both of whom received lucrative new contracts earlier this year.

Pleased by his own good fortune and eager to let the world know about his new position atop the financial hierarchy at the cornerback position, Peterson was quick to tweet out the details of his new deal. And it didn’t take long before a months old feud between Peterson and Sherman was reignited.

Bleacher Report’s Cody Swartz followed up by tweeting an unflattering stat about Peterson from the 2013 season.

Needless to say, Peterson was less than pleased and issued the following emoji-heavy reply:

Not exactly known as a wallflower—quite the opposite, in fact—Sherman caught wind of the whole thing and responded with the only thing Peterson couldn’t possible counter.

Epic as the championship ring tweet was, Sherman gets points for timeliness, but not for originality. Johnny Manziel famously did essentially the same thing almost a year to the day ago, tweeting out a photo of his Heisman trophy in response to some no-name Twitter troll.

This latest incident is just a continuation of something that started in May.

Believing the above tweet was aimed indirectly at him, days later Peterson assessed Sherman’s skills on a Phoenix radio show. And he wasn’t anything but positive about Sherman’s theoretical ability (or inability, as the case may be) to play outside the Seattle system.

Said Peterson:

“I believe if you put him in our system I don’t think he’d be able to last, honestly. … I actually do much more than he is. … I don’t want to get into the that debate as far as the stats that he has and things he has. Obviously, his job is definitely much easier than mine. If you look at their scheme and look at our scheme, he’s a Cover 3 corner. Period.”

Although the feud has once again cooled, don’t expect the Peterson-Sherman beef to be squashed anytime soon. These two are going to meet twice at least twice a year for the next four seasons, meaning this is likely to become a semi-annual event.
