Not many surprises in the future odds, though their are some teams clinging to the the top spots in the future odds with some glaring weaknesses.
New England Patriots
You will never find the New England Patriots to far down a future odds list, because they are a team you can never count out no matter how bad things seem. The Pats have been through ups and downs as a football team but something that they could always rely on was Tom Brady’s passing attack. At the moment, that passing game has become bogged down.
The Patriots rank 27th in passing and 26th in total offense. There is plenty of blame to go around, but the first place we have to look is the offense line which has allowed Brady to be hit way too much.
There is, of course, plenty of season left to get it together, but it is important to keep in mind that 26th ranked offense teams do not win Super Bowls.
Cincinnati Bengals
One would think that if a team has a 3-0 record and rose through the future odds to get the third best odds at winning the Super Bowl that there wouldn’t be a lot to complain about. That is what the Cincinnati Bengals have done and yet here there are on this list.
The AFC North is going to be tough. The Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers are 2-1 but are playing well, and the Cleveland Browns, despite a 1-2 record, are a team that many have pegged as a dark horse contender. Every win is going to count in the AFC North and sometimes close games are going to come down to field goals, which is something the Bengals can’t make as seen by Mike Nugent’s already four missed field goals.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers were the second place favorites to win the Super Bowl when the future odds first opened back in the preseason. The 49ers look like a playoff team, except in the second-half of games.
The 49ers have been outscored 52-3 during the second half of games. The 49ers are racking up penalties and keep giving the ball away. The most perplexing thing is that San Francisco is not doing what it is known for and running the ball late in the game.
Needless to say, the ‘Niners have a lot to work out before they can legit contend. They still cling to the top ten in the Super Bowl odds, but they have plummeted from the to three teams to No. 7 over the last three weeks and will continue to do so if they cannot pull it together.
