Slava Voynov of LA Kings Arrested Monday

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov was arrested early Monday morning at a Torrence area hospital on suspicion of corporal injury to his spouse under California Penal Code . He posted a $50,000 bail.

Neighbors had reported a woman screaming and crying in Voynov’s neighborhood on Sunday night. The police were called after the nurse who was treating the spouse was very alarmed with the injuries that she had.

According to Voynoz’s lawyer, Craig Renetzky, Voynoz has not been charged of a crime at this time. Despite Voynoz not being charged, the NHL wasted no time in taking action and making a stand against domestic violence. With how much domestic violence among several different players has drawn headlines in the NFL, it is easy to see that the NHL was not going to make the same mistakes and acted quickly.

The NHL announced Voynov’s suspension via section 18-1.5 of the collective bargaining agreement since the NHL has no official policy on domestic violence. The Kings released a statement supporting the NHL’s decision to suspend Voynov. Voynov is the second Russian NHL player to be in the spotlight for domestic violence so far this year. Voynov will still be paid by the NHL during the investigation.

Semyon Varlamov, a goalie for Colorado, was arrested earlier in October after his girlfriend brought allegations against him for violence. The case was dropped in December and he was not suspended by the NHL.

Voynov joined the NHL in 2011 and the Kings signed him to a six-year contract worth $25 million in June 2013.
