Titans Move Closer To No. 1 Pick

The Jacksonville Jaguars defeated the Tennessee Titans on Thursday Night Football, 21-13, in a game that many conceived as not really matter. In truth, the game had some huge ramifications.

The game trended on Twitter but most of the comments were about how no one was watching the game because it “didn’t really matter.” Both teams came into the game at 2-12, among the worst record in the NFL, and it did not seem like the teams had much to play for this late in the season.

There were no hopes of playoffs or a struggle to be seeded No. 1, though, the Jaguars did manage to cover a 3.5 point spread as favorites, so Jaguars Bettors likely walked away from the game happy.

The game did have some implication for the draft, however. The team that lost was most likely going to get the No.1 pick in the NFL draft.

For Jacksonville the win was about pride, more than anything else.

Defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks sacked Charlie Whitehurst on the final play of the game to give him 8.5 season sacks, which will also give him a hefty bonus.

Rookie quarterback Blake Bortles completed just 13 of 26 of his passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. He also had 50 yards rushing. Not eye-popping number by any mean, but he still showed potential.

That is the silver lining for the Titans who are now one step closer to the No. 1 pick with the loss.

In regards to that pick the Titans will have a few different options.

With Jake Locker on his way out in 2015, they could keep Zach Mettenberger. He played seven games this season before going down with a shoulder injury. In those seven games he had 1,412 yards and eight touchdowns and a 59.8. Those number are not too bad but considering they come with four fumbles, seven interception and no wins, his future is up in the air.

If they opt to ditch Mettenberger or drop him back to backup status, they could go all in on a rookie quarterback.

Oregon’s Marcus Mariota is the most likely to be picked No.1. Mariota is also a dual-threat quarterback, a trait that the Titans have often favored historically speaking.

The Titans could also continue what they started last year and draft bit time defensive players.

Though with the all-around poor quarterback performance, fans and critics will likely not be satisfied until the Titans have a new man under center.
