Dion Waters Could Be Traded as Cavs Look for Help Down Low
The Cleveland Cavaliers have worked their way into fifth place in the NBA Eastern Conference. Cleveland is currently 16-10 on the season has won two straight and 7 of 10. The Cavaliers are just five games out of first place in the conference and one game behind the Chicago Bulls in the Central division.
With the three big starts on the club – LeBron James, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving – it is easy to overlook other talented players on the Cleveland roster.
Dion Waiters’ name has come up often of late as a possible player that could be traded to bring in defensive help down low for Cleveland.
A number of teams have shown interest in the talented player as the Cavaliers search for help on defense.
On Sunday night, Waiters scored 21 points against the Memphis Grizzlies, one of the teams the Cavaliers are trying to agree to a trade that likely would involve him.
Waiters is in his third season in the league and trying to prove his worth, but that remains difficult with three superstars taking most of the headlines in Cleveland today.
Cleveland would ideally like Waiters to turn into electric scorer off the bench that would help them give their top players a rest and would help Waiters’ future.
However, if it does not play out that way, Cleveland could use Waiters to help solidify the team and help his future in the process by trading him.
The trade value for Waiters it not that strong yet and some of that is due to the player getting frustrated when he does not get his share of shots and that makes the rest of his game suffer.
However, that was all put aside on Sunday when he had 16 shots in the game that resulted in his 22 points.
The victory over Memphis was Cleveland’s best of the season, even though Memphis was without standouts Tony Allen and Zach Randolph.
However, last Friday was not so good for Waiters. He did not play during the second half. That has summed up his short career in the league. He has flashes of brilliance combined with periods of great inefficiency.
Current Cleveland head coach David Blatt is the fourth straight coach to have the opinion that Waiters is better coming off the bench.
However, with the strong belief Waiters has in himself that at times is a difficult situation.
Last season Irving went down hurt for eight games and Waiters filled in for him in grand fashion. The guard averaged 22 points and 5 assists per game. He showed he could be a starter, distribute the ball as well as score it.
The hope for Cleveland as both the club and Waiters get what they need to go forward – the Cavaliers a strong defender in the paint and Waiters a large contract and a place to shine.
